“A Goat for Christmas?”
Remembering the “Reason for the Season.”
First, let me say all the commercialism of the holidays really bothers me. Children in our country have too many things. They are not always grateful for what they get either. But, in other countries, children are struggling just to survive.
Please know I’m not trying to bring attention to myself or brag about my giving, but I sponsor two children through Compassion Ministry. My efforts are only a drop in the bucket compared to the needs of so many, but it is something I feel called to do.
I wanted to support a boy who shared the same birthday as my husband after he passed away. Samuel is from South America and is now a teenager nearing graduation. He has been part of my life for six years.
I had no intention of picking up a second child, but God had other plans.
Compassion sent me a picture of an eight-year-old girl from Central America who needed a sponsor. She wore a purple dress that someone had obviously sewn for her. Two enormous white collars hung from her neck – collars that weren’t even close to the same size. But with her hands on her hips, her face wore an expression of pride and determination. I had to have her in my life.
My sponsorship allows me to connect with these two precious souls through letters. It also helps with schooling and basic needs. But at Christmas, I have the opportunity to send an extra check. Samuel has used his money for shoes and clothing. Leanca, on the other hand, bought a goat so her family could have milk. Not only that, she gave the leftover funds to her family for food. Her thank-you letter was full of gratitude and brought tears to my eyes.
A goat for Christmas.
God loved us so much that He gave.
He gave us the gift of His most beloved Son, Jesus.
In honor of His birth, please consider the reason for the season. Sharing Christ’s love might be as simple as connecting with someone in need of hope in your neighborhood.
Or, consider sponsoring a child in need to honor a loved one you have lost.
